FEBRUARY 23 – MARCH 11, 2012 Catalyst Theatre 8529 Gateway Boulevard Edmonton Alberta
MAMET’S RACE FOUR- LETTER-WORD PROVOCATIVE Renowned playwright David Mamet’s incendiary RACE is set to detonate on stage in Edmonton. The play follows three attorneys, two black and one white, preparing to defend a wealthy white executive charged with the rape of a black woman. As they grapple with the case’s evidence and preconceived notions of guilt, deeply buried emotions and prejudice explode to the surface.
Most public discussions regarding race and racism attempt to explore truths — RACE exposes the tragic lies we tell ourselves and others, while raising painful questions regarding how differences in color, gender, ethnicity and class breed denial, silence, division and resentment. Mamet’s rapier wit and no-holds-barred literary style offers up an evening of electrifying drama, a rollercoaster ride and gripping legal whodunit, fraught with plot twists that keep audiences glued to their seats and guessing the outcome until the curtain drops — powerful, provocative and disturbing. Strong language warning!
